Mark D. Walters, MD is Professor of Ob-Gyn and Reproductive Biology, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He retired from the Cleveland Clinic in 2020 and is currently Emeritus Staff. Dr. Walters earned his MD degree at Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. He joined the Cleveland Clinic in 1993 and was Head of General Gynecology and Urogynecology and /or Vice Chair of Gynecology for 24 years. He was Program Director of the Fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery for 19 years and has taught more than 35 fellows, the majority of whom are now in academic and leadership positions.
Dr. Walters is a renowned educator and researcher and received numerous teaching awards. He co-authored more than 160 peer-reviewed publications, 82 book chapters, and 5 books, including Hysterectomy for Benign Disease (2010) and Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, 1st – 4th Editions, which were translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Chinese. He had numerous editorial positions and was one of the original founders of the International Academy of Pelvic Surgery (IAPS).
Dr. Walters was board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a Past President of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons (SGS) in 2012-2013 and was recognized in 2019 for his overall contributions to the field with the AUGS Lifetime Achievement Award.
