The Role of the First and Only FDA-Approved Indigo Carmine Injection as a Visualization Aid in Cystoscopic Assessment of Ureteral Patency

Speaker
Kelly Wright, MD, FACOG, FACS
Each year, countless patients undergo complex urological and gynecological surgeries, particularly hysterectomies and pelvic organ prolapse repairs. Ureteral injuries can occur during these procedures, leading to serious complications if left undetected. Intraoperative cystoscopy plays a critical role in identifying ureteral injuries.
A diagnostic agent that enhances the visualization of ureteral efflux during cystoscopy could significantly improve the detection and diagnosis of ureteral injuries. Indigo carmine injection, now FDA-approved, serves as a valuable visualization aid for cystoscopic assessment of ureteral integrity in adults following urological and gynecological surgical procedures, thereby supporting the detection of ureteral injuries.
